DFSR replication only flowing in one direction

Server 2008 R2 on all 4 servers in full mesh mode.

I have four Replication groups that are replicated to each of the four servers, 3 of those groups are working fine but one has an issue on one server.

One server receives changes and new files from any of the other three servers instantly but if a file is created or altered on that server it's not replicated to any of the other 3. The connections all look fine and are all enabled.

There are no errors, health report seems fine. I'm at a loss.

Server 2008r2 - Pinned Task Bar / Start Menu items are not displayed

Hi Everyone,

I have some Server 2008 r2 boxes setup with XenApp 6.5 and i noticed things like the date format was not sticking between sessions. As it turns out pinned  the task bar items and start menu items are not being displayed correctly either.

Example:

Login to the server with a new profile, pin notepad to the task bar and start menu.

Logout

Log back into the server and the items are not showing, if you check \AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\user pinned\etc.. the short cuts are there, so they are being saved to the profile, just not displayed at login.

I had citrix profile managment setup, and for testing i have uninstalled it on a copy of my vm with the same results, all GPO have been filtered based on group membership so the only thing that is in place are some wsus settings and some service account configurations.

they are not hidden or anything

Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this if they wanted to so i can try to undo it to this server?

thanks,

DFS in 2000 Server mode, when it should be in 2003 Server mode?

Hi All,

I have 2 domain controller: one on Windows 2003 and the other on 2008 R2. Both the domain and forest are running in Windows Server 2003 functional level.

However when I create a new DFS root, it is automatically put into Windows 2000 server mode. Is this because I am running Server 2003 and not Server 2003 R2?

Cheers,

James

Cant open DFS namespace on any domain controller

Hi

I have a big problem. For some reason our dfs namespace is not accessible from the dfs control panel on any of our dc's inluding the PDC. we have server 2008 w/SP2 domain controllers and one server 2003 w/SP2 domain controller. The strange thing is that dfs is still operational and all files can be accessed as normal.

any ideas where i can start looking. i alsready used portqry to check if port 135 is listening on all dc's, which it is. I have restarted the dfs namespace as well as replication service and i have tried switching off the firewall completely. no luck on all accounts.

Thanks

Hi,

I work for a school, and we have created mapped U drives for the students to log on with and to save their school work.  However, when they log-on their U drive shows up but when going to windows button>Computer, they can also click on Windows>Computer>Network and see the server and every other students U drive.  How can I prevent them from seeing all the other U drives or how do I make it so they only see their own drive.  I used gp to set it up and map the drive.

Thanks for any help

Domain Users recieve Access Denied errors for folders they have permissions to access

$

I've been working on this off and on for weeks now, and I'm really getting nowhere. We have a network share that everyone in our company has access to, called SharedFiles. It's located on our server, running SBS 2008. Recently, we wanted to start closing down access to certain folders - only those in the IT security group can access the Applications sub-folder and such. So I set up the security groups, granted permissions, and tested them with the Effective Permissions feature. Everyone has the appropriate permissions according to that, but in practice whenever someone tries to access a folder they should have rights to, they are given "Access is Denied". The permissions grant full control of a folder to specific groups. Folder A grants full control to members of the SecA security group, for example. While no one is denied permission explicitly, not even Administrators are listed as having permission. Our goal is that having admin privileges isn't enough to access. We want the user to be part of the SecA group.

Initially, I was getting this "Access Denied" problem with Administrators as well, but now it's only Domain Users. I managed to find a thread that confirmed this was caused by UAC and mentioned that Administrators can avoid this problem while still maintaining UAC on the server by adding special permissions the Authenticated Users group in the top level folder, the one that is actually shared:

Authenticated Users - (List Folder / Read Data) (Read Attributes) (Read Extended Attributes) and (Read Permissions) applied to "This folder only"

That did work for all users with Administrative rights. They can access folders that they have rights to, but are denied other folders they don't have rights to. For example, we have Folder A and Folder B. Admin1 is part of the SecA group, but not the SecB group. With the above Authenticated Users permissions in place, Admin1 can access Folder A, but not Folder B. This is what we expect and what we want. However, the same does not apply to Domain Users. Regular users with no admin rights are denied access, even when the Effective Permissions confirms that they should have full control. Thus far, I have not found a way to properly clamp down access. In theory I could just turn off UAC and be done with it, but I don't feel that's really a solution. What can be done to get this to work?

Windows 2003 File Sharing problem

Hello All;

We are running Microsoft Server 2003 R2, and using it as our DNS and DHCP (using AD). We had help setting up our domain, as my boss and I are no experts in Server Administration. Anyway, our Network was working perfectly, all computers on the domain could be seen by all other computers, shares could be set up, sharing printers was a simple task, etc. - until my boss took down the network over the weekend. I am not sure what he did, but we got the network back up and running, but you can no longer see any other computers on the domain, nor can you share printers attached to domain computers. What do I have to do to get this back, or what should I be looking at?

All I know of what he did was to install Peachtree on the server for a reason that I dont understand, and it blocked ports in the Firewall that took down the network. To get the network back, he disabled the firewall, but now we can no longer see any of the other computers on the domain, and all of our shares are gone, and people who print to other printers on the domain cannot do so. He may have made other changes in Windows Server, or the DNS, when attempting to get the network back before he figured out it was the firewall.

Please help.

Thanks

This server is NOT running Exchange - it's a PDC with AD and a file server. There are no other servers it is synchronising with - it's the only server in the domain.

Is there some way to turn off Online Defragmentation? Failing that, is it safe to simply stop the DFS Replication Service and delete the C:\System Volume Information\DFSR\database_F05C_88FF_5C88_C238 directory and then restart the service, or will it bring the server to a crashing halt? Or is there another way to get rid of this?

Thanks,

Storage spaces, replace HDD or move data between physical disks, not possible?

$

I am sorry if this has been answered before, but there seems to be difficult to find enough information about Storage Spaces.

I have 5 x 2 TB of data disks in my server, which are all joined in a Simple space in Storage spaces (for various reasons).

Although, there seems to be no option to replace one of the disks, in my case because I have no space in my server for more HDDs, so I want to change one or two disks to bigger ones.

I blame myself for not reading better about Storage Spaces, but I just assumed it was like a improved version of Windows Drive Extender (where it moved all the data from one disk to the other ones in the pool if you wanted to replace it).

Another scenario could be that I am getting S.M.A.R.T.-varnings about one particular drive and want to replace it, there must be some way to move data from one physical disk and not the whole pool?

Thanks,

Daniel

Microsoft iSCSI Target on Removable Media

$
0
0

I have a dumb question that doesn't seem to be covered anywhere.

2 servers - Windows 2008 Server R2 SP1
One server is Initiator
One server is Target

Successfully setup and connected to a 3TB target VHD, initialized, mounted to drive letter N, formatted and on the Initiator server it looked as though I had a local drive N with 3TB, as it should look.

The Microsoft iSCSI target is a removable backup drive connected via eSata. As an experiment, I removed the backup drive/media while the Initiator and Target were connected. Upon plugging the backup drive back in, the initator would say (after some fiddling) that it was connected to the target, but drive N never reappeared in disk management, yet both the target and initiator were saying they were connected.

I ended up deleting the virtual disk from the target, and all references to it on the initiator, and started over again.

So here's are the dumb questions.... do the principles of iSCSI mean that you can't use it with removable media? IE: External usb drives, hot swappable eSATA drives etc.. Did the Microsoft iSCSI target and initiator behave as one would expect because I shouldn't be yanking the drive out of the backup bay without "DISCONNECTING" the initiator from the target first?

IE: If I wanted to use a Microsoft iSCSI Target with Removable Media for a media backup rotation, how would I accomplish this or have I found a bug in the Microsoft iSCSI Target software?

FYI - During the 1st attempt at this, I installed Microsoft iSCSI Target while windows firewall was disabled. I turned on WF and uninstalled Microsoft iSCSI Target and it wanted me to reboot to finish uninstalling, but I didn't because I couldn't at the time. I then (without rebooting) reinstalled the Microsoft iSCSI Target software and reconfigured it and let it create its WF rules.

More dumb questions - Does Microsoft iSCSI Target/Initiator "RELY ON" Windows Firewall and must it be running on both the source and destination servers? or is it ok for WF to be disabled on both servers and all will still work right?

FYI - The background to this is that I'm trying to cut down a 4 day backup run to less than 24 hours. The Microsoft iSCSI Target will work for this, but it would be great if I could remove the backup media without much work to take care of the Microsoft iSCSI connection between the two servers. THANKS!

Windows 2003 SP2 - native ntbackup

This server backs up both local data (on the server itself) and data stored elsewhere. That data is accessed through mapped drives (they are mapped on this server to the remote location).

The target of the backup is a internal backup tape drive.

The backups are scheduled backups that are supposed to start at 11:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------

The backups succeed most of the time.

I can see in the Application Log of the Event Viewer that drives E:, H:, I:, etc. were backed up. The log also shows that verification succeeded. I can even restore data to the server and the data is valid (I can open a restored document - the content is there).

In the case of a successful backup, this is the sequence of events shown in the System Log:

So 30 minutes later, RSM stops. Why?

I thought it might be certain backup tapes but more than once, I've observed that if I leave the tape in after a backup failure, the backup of the following night will succeed - with the same tape.

Of course, the backup runs under the same credentials. Backups obviously have not been configured to run under different credentials for different nights (it would make no sense and I would have remembered doing something so outlandish).

Is there a method to augment logging level for RSM so I could determine what is causing RSM to stop?

File owner is "nobody" when mounted with NFSv4.1

Created Anonymous NFS Share on Windows 2012 and mounted on RHEL 6.2 client. Owner for the files are showing "nobody" when mounted in with NFSv4.1, correct owner and groups are being shown as per the UID and GID provided on NFS Permission, when mounted with NFSv3.

I guess this because, with NFSv4, identity tracking has been redesigned and now uses a identity mapping daemon (idmapd). But not sure, how to fix this issue. Any setting needs to be done on Windows 2012 Storage Server side.

Getting "Authentication failure" error when adding an iSCSI target with CHAP in Windows 2008R2 Server

$

Hi all,

I would like to get some help from you guys about connecting to an iSCSI target portal in Windows 2008R2 Server using iSCSI initiator.

I have several NAS's (QNAP's and Synology) in my dept and I would like to connect to them via iSCSI with CHAP enabled. I can only connect to them without CHAP turned on but I can't if I enabled CHAP and I am getting  the "authentication failure" error for some reason. The secret password is 16 characters long (letters and numbers only).  I don't have IPSec enabled and I don't have mutual CHAP enabled as well. I make sure the login information matches on both NAS and iSCSI initiator. I have tired to connect these NAS's from other systems none of them can connect to them with CHAP enabled.

Can someone walk me through the troubleshooting steps?

Thanks.

DFS Namespace over Mixed Servers 2008/2003 ?

$

I'm looking at implementing a DFS namespace so in essence we have a single namespace for all sites regardless of where the users roam to with their laptops.

We have a few GPO's which copy files to each laptop at startup but we have to specify a file location for site. I'm assuming DFS namespace wil allow a single name globally.

We are currently a 2003 STD FFL but the schema/Domain has been extended in preperation for 2008 R2

Can we have the DFS namespace on a mixture of 2003 and 2008 servers? Should we implement 2008 R2 DC's first?
