We recently decommissioned a Server 2008 fileserver (chfileserv01) and replaced with a Server 2008 fileserver (chnas01) running MS Storage Server. We added a CNAME alias to point chfileserv01 to chnas01. From any XP or Server 2003 machine, it will not recognize by name. From a Win7/Server 2008 machine its fine. If I ping chfileserv01 it resolves to chnas01 but if I try to browse somewhere such \\chfilserv01\shared (that should bring up \\chnas01\shared) it throws the duplicate name exists on the network error. All research I have done has said this is not a DNS issue but a WINS issue. We do not run WINS. I have tried registry additions and SPN additions on one of the affected machines but its still happening. This is happening across our domains. I can't find anything in the event viewer on one of the affected machines. chfileserv01 was a VM and is now shut down.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
