Really slow file sharing between windows server 2003 to 2008

Hello everyone,

I got a really slow file sharing over 2 subnets on my network. (one server is 2003 and the other 2008)

now, i searched in the internet and i saw that the best solution is to tick the TCPip paramaters on the registry... (because there is a big "Lag" and the servers are using SMBv1...) (please notify me if you think that this isn't the case)

Anyway, my problem is that i can't change the registry of this production servers. (My manager not allowing me to do so)

my questions is:

     1) is there any hotfix or specific windows update patch that i can put on my servers (or one of the server) that resolves this issue? (because this is the best solution for me, because it's more "offical" and i don't want to harm the OS) (My servers are not updating because it's an offline network, for security reasons)

     2) if not, what are the risks on applying the registry settings suggested here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverfiles/thread/e55022a4-db65-4dc9-a2f1-96b7f5d8e2fa

     3)  and can some1 tell me what is the meaning by: "DisableTaskOffload" on the TCPip parameters. and how it's related to the MaxTCPBuffer. (that many articals pointed to this subject) (or it's not related at all?)

Thank you very much and sorry for all the question, it's just that im really compused on this one.... (sorry about my english, im not native english speaker)

thank you. :-)
