I have two Windows Server 2008 R2 boxes.
Each box has 3TB of space.
I would like to configure a Fail Over Cluster such that a File Sever continues to operate in the event one server goes down.
Ideally, I would have two servers (acting as two nodes) connected over network to a dedicated shared storage (SAN/NAS). However that's not the boat I'm in.
Currently, I have a VHD connected over iSCSI and turned into a "Dynamic Disk" in RAID1. This is working pertty well. But I have a feeling it's a very dumb idea. Extremely dumb even. So dumb I'm wondering why I did it.
So should I instead use DFS? Or will I be able to cluster?
All of the guides I have read (both here, and on the greater Internets) mostly point to 3 elements to a cluster: 2 file servers. 1 shared storage.
But as I described above - I only have 2 file servers that happen to have a lot of capacity.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
EDIT: I should point out that we're a small business with no dedicated IT staff. And if you haven't guessed already, I am very new to clustering/san/nas/dfs/insert-acronym-here.
