I have a customer who is moving offices. The move is being done 50 users at a time with a total of about 200 users.
My questions is regarding DFS name space and replication;
My current environment:
Domain and forest level : 2000
DC1: 2008 32bit (holds all FSMO roles)
DC2: 2003 r2 32 bit
File Server 1: windows 2008 r2 (storage edition) 2TB worth of data.
File server 2: to be purchased but will run Server 2008 r2 storage (or STD)
Currently 50% of users are mapped manually the other 50% of users are mapped to a home drive in random directories.
The pipe between the two sites is going to be 6MB. So we are concerned that the pipe will get saturated with file transfers hence setup DFS locally, setup and seed replication and then move the file server to the new site. (AD Sites will be setup with two sites and appropriate subnets).
MY question is with the different version of DC’s
- Should I first upgrade my domain to 2003 forest and domain level
- Will my DFS use DFRS replication?
- What servers should I set as the DFS names space servers. File servers or DC’s. What is the disadvantage of using the file servers as name space servers? Should there be two of them?
- Will the DFS namespace be setup in server 2k8 mode
- Is there anything else I have to be careful of or should pay attention to.
- What are tools/commands that i can use to monitor the initial replication.
Thank you all in advance.
