I have a client with a Windows 2008 SP1 server (not R2) utilizing the Symantec Backup Exec 2013 remote agent for backup. We have been getting initialization failures on the System State, C: drive, and D: drives (as listed by the backup log). When I reviewed the properties of the drives, under the Shadow Copies tab, I see "Initialization failed. Error 0x80042304: 0x80042304. A few weeks ago we tried to re-register the DLL files and found no improvement. We did find since then, that re-registering the dlls on 2008 is a bad idea. I have been searching but have not found a method of 're-installing' the VSS services to 2008. My vssadmin list writers command shows System Writer, ASR Writer, Shadow Copy Optimization Writer, WMI Writer, BITS Writer, Registry Writer, and COM+ REGDB Writer all as 'Stable' and 'No Error'. When we do the vssadmin list providers command, we get no results at all. I suspect this is the root of our issue, but cannot find a resolution.
Please advise,
Thank you
