Old shortcuts create new mapped drives after DFS installed

I have a customer who has clients that have two main mapped drives on their PC's from the Server

eg - \\FileServer\Dept file and \\FileServer\Shared file

Due to the Companies growth they opened a new office and I have installed DFS, there new DFS root contained their existing file server and a file server in another site.  The IT manager would like everyone mapped to the root folder and then through using Access Based Enum they can add further folders etc and the users can only see the folders they have permissions too.

So for example I ran a script which disconnected the existing drives and mapped the new root folder to the following share

\\fileshare.local\rootdfs

So far, so good............however when I click a shortcut that is on my desktop that was mapped to the old file server it opens the folder and then creates a brand new mapped drive

eg \\fileshare.local\rootdfs\Dept file

It will do this for every different shortcut!

Can I not map a drive to the root without this happening?  Anyone else had this before?.....Any solutions?  There doesn't appear to be much to configure in the DFS console

Thanks

Dave
