Hello!
I recently setup a Dell PE410T server that has 6 (2x500GB 4x2TB) drives using Windows server 2008 R2 SP1. Unfortunately the card came with a SAS card instead of a PERC card. I was unaware of the difference be tween the two and my Dell rep never pointed it out.. surprise surprise. The SAS wont do RAID5. So to work around this I configured hardware mirroring for the system drives and decided to use Windows Software RAID5 for the 4x2TB drives. Due to client demands I had to roll-out the server before the initial sync was completed. I find the sync keeps having to rebuild after each reboot. It's brand new so there are no disk failure problems.
Is there any way to speed up this process? They are obviously seeing the performance hit. The machine is a quad-core Xeon and overhead is at 25% on the disks at the moment. I noticed it's also taking an exorbitant amount of time to sync.. like
days just to do 25%. Is this normal?
