What exactly is the DFS "Root Shared Folder"?

When I create a DFS namespace on my 2008r2 server, under the Edit Settings button, on the page where you name the namespace, it tells you will create a shared folder on the namespace server.  I dont understand the relationship between this folder, and those you add on the namespace tab in the gui.  If when creating the namespace, I point the root folder to d:\data, then when I try to add the smb share that points to d:\data, my dfs namespace becomes\\domain.com\Data\Data.

If when creating the DFS namespace, does pointing it to the local d:\data, have the effect making that like a dfs folder?  But then it doesn't seem like it is access via smb?  This is very confusing.  Thanks for clarifying if you can.
