I am testing storage spaces on windows server 2012 and on this particular server i have an Intel RAID controller, SRCSASLS4I, with 16 physical hard disks attached.
for testing and getting familiar with storage spaces i have created 16 individual virtual disks using Intel's RAID Web Console 2 drive management tool so the system sees all the physical disks individually.
the problem that i am coming across is that i don't seem to be able to find a way to correlate the physical disk list that i get with GET-PHYSICALDISK and the numbering that Intel's RAID Web Console 2 assigns to the virtual drives. never mind the physical drives as seen by the raid controller!
i tried creating each of the virtual drives in Intel's RAID Web Console 2 application one at a time and noting the physicaldisk number that the system assigns to it and then renaming the virtual drive via the Web Console 2 tool to match but this is very time consuming and error prone.
for instance, if i remove one of the drives and re-boot the server, the physicaldisk numbering is different and does not match the matching that i had so painstakingly done!
i have tried to find something to would allow me to consistently and unambiguously correlate the physicaldisk numbering scheme to the virtual disks as assigned by Intel's RAID Web Console but i have come up empty handed!
has anyone come across this problem and is there a solution?
is there something that i am missing with any of the properties?
while toggling the drive light works from Intel's RAID Web Console 2 interface, it doesn't work from Server Manager under storage spaces with this controller.
i am running the latest firmware, drivers and web console version for this controller and the server is fully patched and updated!
any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated!
