Hello,
we have a large number of File Servers that are running 2003 Standard Server (32 bit). These servers are running as virtual machines on VMWare ESX and the file systems are all NTFS. We would like to upgrade these servers to 2008 R2 which is 64 bit. As a possible solution we are thinking of the following:
- Install new virtual servers with 2008 R2
- disconnect the data partition from the old 2003 servers in VMWare
- connect the data partitions to the new 2008 R2 servers in VMWare.
Technically this would be possibe in VMWare. We realize that we would have to redo the shares and correct mapped drives etc. But would we run into any other problems with the NTFS file system? The data partitions would still be formatted with the 2003-version of NTFS while 2008R2 surely has a newer version. Is there any way of upgrading the NTFS file system after connecting it to the new 2008 R2 servers?
Thank you very much for your input!
