Environment:
File Server A - located at remote location with example IP: 10.75.75.10, is a VM on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster. Issue: Performance on server is horrendous using direct host map or via DFS (Worst)
Client is on a 192.x.x.x network and the server is behind firewall as crossing two domains but test is a a mass delete so data not crossing firewall.
First test \\domainname\deptshare\location\DFS Share; checked out 2150 files (23.57 Mbytes) in 35 Minutes and 52 seconds. Items deleted at 3 items/second
Second test \\server name\share (point to same location as above test); checked out 2150 files (23.57 MBytes) in 5 minutes and 27 seconds at 51 items/second
Third test \\old server\share (point to old physical server location where data originally located): check out 2150 files (23.57 Mbytes) in 2 Minutes
We also noted on first and second test that I/O would hault for 5-10 seconds and also seeing large ddelays when using normal applications such as office.
Other Notes:
The server has 4GB of RAM and we don't have any more to give as we are running down to 10GB on the Hyper-V host.
Server is running at 90-95% RAM utilization and 5-10% CPU (Have dual CPU VCpu's) RAM utilization is being taken up primarly by Undelete Software (UdServe.exe @ 2,442,340K) and SearchIndexer at 133,800K)
FOR DFS
We are setup as follows
Namespace: \\company.com\files\Files
DeptShare
User
NameSpace Servers
Site: Name of site for above Server
Path \\ServerName\Files
Folder Target
Site: Site of server above; Path \\servername\Dept
So to access DFS path would be \\companyname.com\DeptShare\location name
We currently do not have replication setup.
