"I am a local user who is part of the Administrators local group. Within a directory on the machine, there exists a shortcut which needed to be updated. Viewing permissions showed that the Administrators local group had full control over the directory (which was inherited permission). Logged in as myself, I attempted to change the properties of the shortcut. I was denied.
In the course of diagnosing the problem this is what I discovered. I am part of the Administrators local group as state above. The Administrators local group had full control over the directory in which the shortcut exists. Viewing "Effective permissions" for the directory and the shortcut shows that both my user explicitly and the Administrators local group have full control.
Even attempting as Administrator, I was unable to update the properties of the shortcut.
The only was I was able to update the properties of the shortcut was to explicitly give my user Full Control permissions on the directory and object."

I am having the exact same issue on a server running Server 2008 SP2 Enterprise configured as a file server. It is not part of a domain and this problem seems to occur when using any group to grant permissions to a folder/file. I have tried modifying files over the network using vista enterprise sp2 and xp pro sp3 as well as through a local session.
If anyone has a suggestion I would greatly appreciate it.
-Thanks in advance.
