I've recently realised that huge space savings can be achieved on our file server if users were using .docx files rather than .doc
For example, I found a file that was nearly 1/2GB (due to insertion of high res images). Converting to .docx reduced it to 4MB. It is becoming increasingly common that users are inserting large images into docs. I know you can optimise images etc. in .doc files but I don't think end users will ever do that on a regular basis.
Using file server resource manager, I've switched on file screening on some directories. Essentially, each time someone opens a .doc file, they get an email saying they should convert to .docx. The aim would be to phase out .doc files over time. Good idea?
Has anyone else tried something like this to help change the culture within their end user community?
