Problem with renaming a folder in a redirected location - duplicate folder created. Win7 concurrent sessions on different PCs.

Hello Everyone,

We are using Folder Redirection, Offline Mode and Roaming profiles with Windows 7 x64 workstations. Many of our staff have more that one workstation that they use on the network concurrently.

In this scenario encountered the following issue when renaming a folder located on a redirected location (e.g. Desktop, Documents etc).

1. User is logged into both PC1 and PC2.

2. Using PC1 user creates folder on the desktop called "Test_Folder", within this folder they then create a new text file.

    Result: The same folder and contents are now displayed on desktop of both PC1 & PC2

3. Using PC2 the user renames "Test_Folder" to "Test_Folder2"

    Result : PC2 displays the renamed folder "Test_Folder". PC1 now displays two folders "Test_Folder" and "Test_Folder2"

We have noticed that ;

  • If the folder is renamed on the same PC that it's originally created on, this issue doesn't occur
  • If the folder is empty when it's renamed the problem doesn't occur.
  • Files can be always be renamed without problems.
  • If a manual sync is triggered in Sync Center on the affected machine the issue is successfully repaired (i.e. the original duplicate folder is correctly removed).

We have tried the following to try and fix this problem, without success;

  • Installing latest hotfixes KB2714014 & KB2761645 associated with offline files.
  • Using the Group Policy setting to "Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files”
  • Searching through forums etc

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated !

Thanks, Makes
